Our story
The Amite County Historical and Genealogical Society was founded in 2004 and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All proceeds go to fund restoration projects and any organization expenses.
The purpose and objectives of the Amite County Historical and Genealogical Society shall be to provide for the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of materials and knowledge, about the history of peoples, families, structures, objects, and items of interest, importance, and value, in relation to Amite County, Mississippi, and its vicinity.
The Constitution and By-Laws were executed and signed by the founding members on July 23, 2004. Subsequently, the Constitution and By-Laws were amended by approval vote of the members in the election concluded June 9, 2007.
The affairs of the society are directed by a five-member Executive Board which is made up of the four officers and one at-large member. The four officers are President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Board is elected by majority vote of the membership at the Annual Meeting every June. The five Board members serve one-year terms but may be reelected to consecutive terms.
The President, in consultation with the Board, may appoint assistant secretaries and other officers assigned to specific duties under the direction of the Secretary or other officer. The duties of assistants may include Membership Chair, Corresponding Secretary, Newsletter Chair, Archivist/Historian, Genealogy Historian, and such other persons as necessary as determined by the Board.
The society meets either in person and/or via Zoom meeting on the 2nd Saturday of each month with the exception of July. We have several field trips each year usually visiting local cemeteries, historical sites, historical homes, and occasionally venturing out of Amite County to visit sites of interest such as the library at Mississippi College, battlefields, and museums.
We maintain the Little Red Schoolhouse in Liberty, MS as a museum for Amite County history as well as a repository for books about the county and its families, genealogy research, and old school records. We do not allow the books to be checked out, however our members will be happy to help you use these books for research when you are visiting. We have numerous books for sale on the website as well as in the museum. The museum is currently closed for restoration but hopefully visiting hours will resume in 2022.
We welcome new members from all over the globe whether you are originally from Amite County, have ancestors from Amite County, or just have an interest in Amite County for whatever reason!
